What it's used for

  • Measuring relative moisture levels in building materials such as wood, concrete, plaster, drywall, brick, and mortar.
  • Detecting hidden moisture, water intrusion, and damp areas in walls, ceilings, floors, and other building structures.
  • Inspecting buildings after leaks, flooding, or water damage to identify affected areas.
  • Checking the moisture condition of subfloors, concrete, and screeds before installing flooring materials.
  • Locating concealed plumbing leaks and moisture migration behind finished surfaces without causing damage.
  • Monitoring the drying progress of building materials during restoration and renovation projects.

The CEM DT-128M Non-Contact Moisture Meter offers the advantage of fast, non-destructive moisture detection using high-frequency electromagnetic (capacitive) sensing technology. It measures moisture up to approximately 40 mm beneath the surface without the need for pins or probes, leaving no marks or damage on the material.

The meter can be moved directly across the surface to perform real-time moisture scanning, making it ideal for quickly identifying damp areas, hidden leaks, and moisture distribution in walls, floors, ceilings, and other building materials. Its backlit LCD display, adjustable moisture alarm, and MAX/MIN and Data Hold functions help users efficiently locate and compare moisture levels during building inspections, water damage restoration, and preventive maintenance.

Applications:

--Building construction and renovation sites

--Water damage restoration and flood recovery projects

--Flooring installation (hardwood, laminate, vinyl, and tile)

--Home inspections for real estate and property maintenance

--Concrete, screed, and subfloor moisture assessment before floor covering installation

--Woodworking, cabinetry, and furniture manufacturing

--Roof, wall, and ceiling inspections for hidden moisture intrusion

--Leak detection around bathrooms, kitchens, windows, and plumbing systems

--Mold prevention and indoor air quality investigations by locating moisture sources

--Inspection of drywall, plaster, masonry, brick, and concrete without surface damage

During a pre-purchase home inspection using the DT-128M, the inspector scanned the bathroom walls without causing any damage. Elevated moisture readings were detected behind the shower tiles, even though the grout and tile surface appeared normal. Based on these findings, a plumber performed a further inspection and confirmed a slow leak in a concealed water supply pipe. Early detection allowed the buyer to request repairs before completing the purchase, avoiding costly structural damage and mold remediation in the future.
