CEM DT-6505  is a three-in-one electrical testing device that works as both a regular digital multimeter + a high-voltage insulation resistance tester (often called megger or megohmmeter) + low ohm meter

The insulation multimeter is essential for professionals who both troubleshoot live systems and perform preventive maintenance

An insulation tester works very differently—it sends a much higher voltage, usually between 50 and 1000 volts (or even more for heavy-duty models), to really put the insulation of wires, motors, and other equipment to the test.

This high voltage lets the tool find tiny leaks, hidden moisture, or burnt, carbonized spots inside the insulation that a standard meter would never detect. Catching these problems early helps prevent short circuits, equipment breakdowns, and the risk of electric shock.

Safety:

IEC61010-1 CAT IV 600V / CAT III 1000V
UL, CSA, and TÜV listed for maximum safety and global compliance

Applications:

An insulation multimeter is a must-have tool for professionals who need to work on live electrical systems and also perform regular maintenance to prevent problems.

  • Testing Motors– Checking whether the insulation inside a motor has worn down so badly that electricity is leaking directly into the motor's grounded metal casing (which could cause a short circuit).
  • Checking Cables– Finding damaged outer jackets or trapped moisture inside long underground or overhead power cables.
  • Troubleshooting VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives)– Using the meter's low-pass filter feature to measure voltage on the output of VFDs. These devices produce "noisy" electrical signals that confuse regular multimeters.
  • Diagnosing Equipment– First, using the standard multimeter functions (like voltage and diode test) to check a drive's input rectifier. Then, switching to insulation test mode to check the cables that supply power to it.

combination functions (Insulation Tester + Multimeter+ low ohm meter )

Insulation Tester (Megohmmeter):

-- a selectable high voltage (e.g., 50V, 125V, 250V, 500V, 1000V)
-- measure resistance in Megohms (MΩ) or Gigohms (GΩ)
-- Polarization Index (PI) and Dielectric Absorption Ratio (DAR) to provide a deeper analysis
-- identify insulation breakdown in motor windings, cables, and transformers

Multimeter

-- True RMS AC/DC voltage (up to 1000V)
-- AC/DC current (mA to 10A)
-- Resistance (ohm), continuity with buzzer
-- Diode test, capacitance, temperature, etc.

low ohm meter
-- measure very small electrical resistances with high accuracy, milliohm (mΩ)
-- verify that electrical connections are safe, and reliable
-- by detecting microscopic resistance that causes heat, energy loss, and equipment failure.
-- "4-Wire" (Kelvin) method

advanced safety & protection

-- avoid hazardous voltage
-- remote App monitor,  stay at a safe distance while checking your test readings
-- Auto discharge of voltage test signal
-- high CAT safety ratings:  CAT IV 600V / CAT III 1000V

insulation multimeter used in industrial Electric Motor Windings and VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives)

Testing whether the insulation inside a motor has worn down so badly that electricity is leaking directly into the motor's metal casing (which is grounded)

Special insulation testers use higher voltage to reveal hidden damage.
