What Does a Socket Tester Check?

A socket tester can spot several common wiring issues, including:

  • Correct wiring – Confirms the outlet is wired properly.
  • Open ground – Indicates the protective earth connection is missing.
  • Open neutral – Detects a disconnected neutral wire.
  • Open live (hot) – Shows the live conductor is not connected.
  • Live/neutral reversed – Identifies incorrect polarity.
  • Live/ground reversed – Detects dangerous wiring errors.
  • Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI/RCD) testing – Tests whether the protective device trips correctly when a fault is simulated (on compatible models).
